समाजवादी पार्टी (SP) के राज्यसभा सांसद और पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री चंद्रशेखर के बेटे नीरज शेखर ने राज्यसभा की सदस्यता से इस्तीफा दे दिया है. वे लोकसभा चुनाव में अपने परिवार की परंपरागत सीट बलिया से टिकट मांग रहे थे, लेकिन समाजवादी पार्टी ने टिकट नहीं दिया था.

नीरज शेखर तब से पार्टी नेतृत्व से नाराज चल रहे थे. सूत्रों के हवाले से खबर आई है कि नीरज शेखर जल्द ही भारतीय जनता पार्टी (बीजेपी) में शामिल हो सकते हैं. ऐसा कहा जा रहा है कि 2020 में भारतीय जनता पार्टी (बीजेपी) उन्हें उत्तर प्रदेश से राज्यसभा में भेज सकती है.

राज्यसभा अध्यक्ष ने नीरज शेखर के इस्तीफा को स्वीकार भी कर लिया है.
